evaluation question 4

Evaluation question 3

How have you learned from audience feedback?
[ UPLOAD VIDEO FOOTAGE OF PEER INTERVIEWS ASAP! ]

Audience feedback gave me a strong idea of what the audience prefer to see within my film poster and advertisement of my upcoming movie also advising me of significant changes that will aid my campaign, giving me a clear insight into their mind and thoughts allowing me to see how my audience would be attracted to my product.
Feedback regarding changes to font, colour, size and images used aided my campaign. Whilst talking to my individuals I felt that they were in sync with my product and ideas as if they also wanted the outcome to be as successful as can be.
My initial poster idea was stretched out into three different posters, this allowed me have diverse choice when selecting my final movie poster. At first I and my group had discussed and given feedback to each other on the cover, individuals were then asked for their preferences on the magazine covers. They commented on the layouts and which magazine appeared more like a publication rather than coursework.
I learnt that without audience feedback you are putting the success of your product at risk of being unnecessary to the market and less appealable to a target audience. Feedback is a major priority throughout a media campaign; this is clearly evident in any successful media associated product.

Evaluation question 2

I believe it is evident when comparing my advertisement campaign to that of others with the same intent as my product; I cater to a large target audience of 18+ young adults whom thrive of the movie genre of my product. This allows me to target my campaign not only to the UK resident but even a global campaign via assessable platforms such as the internet.
My trailer will be promoted via sociable internet sites, huge exposure will be given to our key target audience. The intensity and restricted information is our main USP in our trailer the sense of ambiguity will then lead the audience with the curiosity of our product; most importantly they would then research into film using a familiar media platform thus drawing the audience in. Synergy is used throughout our campaign; this will build a form of hype amongst our key target audience allowing them to comment on the new release in the midst of their social circles consequently promoting to each other, widening our campaign before the official theatrical trailer has yet not been released following a promotion of posters. I developed the example of a viral campaign which I had witnessed and attended at its release, 2008 saw a wide online advertisement campaign of upcoming movie release Cloverfield via Myspace. The online promotion for Cloverfield saw to it that the movie would gain massive exposure to its key target audience.
The technique allows movies that to do not already have a huge audience, create a viral hype which soon escalates so wide recognition. For example a Superman(Bryan Singer, 2006) only had to release the famous iconic symbol which represents Superman as a poster considering Superman has an existing fan base which date back to years therefore catering to a global audience of all ages.

E.Q No.1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of a real media product?

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of a real media product? on Prezi [prezi link appears as corrupt on blogger, seek assitance]

My media product develops forms and conventions of existing media products instead of challenging them. An audience is prone to relate the contents of a horror film with a previous one and notice the repetition or similarities in their story lines. Burton’s formula talks of this and calls it repetition that being that what we see is just a more up to date version of previous films just put in present day context. My media product provides the audience with a current horror film which follows Burton’s repetition formula. This is an example of my media product developing the conventions of a real media product as well as my horror film developing the roles of the stock characters. The identity of the killer in some films is one that is the least likely to be suspected e.g. SCREAM the killer was Cindy’s boyfriend as well as another close peer. However my film tackles the idea of a stereotypical male villain, as our society has evolved since that of patriarchal times we were determined to make our ‘villain’ a female, many of the stock characters remain the same as this adds to the ‘repetition’ spoken about in Burton’s formula.I decided to follow examples of existing horror trailers and their use of the fast rapid shots of scenes which contain the thrill of a horror film thus bringing in the enticing the audience and creating hype for our film. I believe that one of my trailers strong points is that we challenge the convention of the usage of a main weapon. Many films such as SCREAM and HALLOWEEN use knife and this is evident in their trailers whereas ours does not exploit the use of a murderous weapon, creating more suspense for the audience. My trailer never reveals the identity of the killer as this will ruin the idea of a teaser trailer. To some extent my movie challenges some conventions as the stereotypical vulnerable female stock character has evolved into a ‘villain’ due to a traumatizing rape from a fellow peer, leading her to take revenge on her circle of friends leaving the masculine ‘jock’ last. SCREAM has a similar ending, Cindy was the main target and was left last to kill by her boyfriend whom took disguise as in a cloak and mask. We challenged this ending by having our female masked killer leaving the male ‘jock’ last on her list. I believe that my media product develops the conventions of an existing media product and it’s been made evident through the planning of my movie.

Filming issues

Throughout filming me and my group have faced many difficulties such as faulty camera's and lack of comitted cast.
whilst we were filming crutial scenes for our trailer the school camera failed on us we then had to find a replacement camera as the filming was urgent and we were running out of time, we now have film on a cassete and memory card. Uploading the footage from the memory card has been a struggle as there are formating issues which allowed the footage only to be uploaded to a PC, today on the 24 of November 2010 the technician told us that the footage is now invalid on the PC and Apple Mac.
Me and my media group are now facing a huge dilema as our footage is refusing to import on both Apple and PC and all coursework is due next Wednesday 1st December 2010. We now have to re-shoot a vast majority of our trailer days before our work is due making sure that our NEW cast will not fail us and that we re-shoot with enough time to edit before Wednesday.

Friday 19 November 2010

Me and me media group have decided that the will divide the work between each other, film posters was my task. I decided that i should do the movie covers as i feel comfortable with photoshop from my coursework from last year.
I came up with three draft copies and have now begun discussing with my group which will be our final choice. I also created the a name for the movie production which will work in co-operation with out film, ' Paranormal Productions' is our movie production.
We originally came up with the name 'SHE LOVES ME, SHE LOVES ME NOT' but we then decided that we should shorten it to 'SHE LOVES ME NOT'. I have now made the film title and used it on my blog title.
Manipulating the images on photoshop was a struggle as i needed to make the covers resemble a horror poster as much as possible. When creating the covers on photoshop i had to be sure that the colors, font and images worked well together.

Risk assement

Health and Safety/Risk Assessment

I looked into the health and safety for my actors and group whilst filming our trailer.
Producers should ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that persons working with and for them are not exposed to risks to their health and safety. An example of what may be considered reasonably practicable would be if location filming was taking place in a warehouse with poor lighting. It would be appropriate to ensure that extra lighting is used and that all sharp or otherwise hazardous equipment is made safe.

You should have at least one experienced member of the crew who is aware of health and safety issues.

Some genres may pose more risks than others i.e. horror or action films or scenes involving animals. The production team should discuss safety issues before filming begins and take steps to avoid or reduce the risks identified.

We also looked at the use of equipment and the safety used around it.

And we obviously had to look at the risks involved with our filming/locations:

- Know the fire exits

- Know when the park closes

- No real weapons

- Film in big groups

- Be aware of the area

I created the script for our movie trailer and then screen printed it so that i could upload an image of the document.

film ratings

No-one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No-one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work.

November 3rd 2010: Media lesson

Today was our first lesson back from half term, I was given a task to go over my blog and assess my work. I was given an evaluation sheet and evaluated my blog giving my self a level for each criteria out of 4, 1 being the lowest and 4 being the highest. After evaluating my blog me and my group had an editorial meeting to organize what each of us would be doing and we recorded this on a 'student action sheet', this has allowed us to be sure of what each member of the group will be doing in the next couple of days. This action sheet has made the work load equal on the group as no one is doing more than others and the sheet almost gives the group personal deadlines that should be met so that we can continue on with the next task at hand.

Planning our Film tittle

Me and my media group have already decided that our movie tittle will be ' SHE LOVES ME, SHE LOVES ME NOT'. In t he image above you see that we have tested out different tittle styles and from here will decide on two final font styles and then design them both and choose our final movie tittle.

Filming for our Horror Trailer

Me and my media group have been already created our film concept, recruited our cast list and obtained our props and costume for the filming. So we decided that during our half term holiday we will meet up with our cast and film for our trailer. I took pictures of my group whilst filming to record our efforts as a team. We hope that the footage we film over the holiday will be enough but we will see when it comes to editing.
Monday 25 October 2010: Day 1 of filming.

Killer Research

When comparing the Killers in different Slasher horrors i realized that most of them either conceal their identity using an erie costume and this would normally be accompanied with a weapon mainly a Knife or a a serrated object, this would be the murder weapon throughout the film or the killer may switch to anything that is convenient to them.

whilst researching into other film synopsis thaty most resemble mine i have realised that the main characters are more or less 'Best of friends', our film challanges this and makes the Best friend 'Jess' be the killer, her main reason for doign so is that she was raped by her best friend (amanda) boyfriend, Jared. Jess believes that her circle of friends are aware of what he had done to her and she then cuts herself off from them and kills them of one by one leaving Amanda and Jared to be her last victims.....

Props
· Technology: Mobile phones, computer
· Mask and costume to conceal the identity of the attacker/stalker
· Attire to suite the stock characters roles

Whilst looking for our props i found other material which i thought i should take note to show that the time was taking into prop research.
The image on the right is what i purchased for the making of our film, we are still looking into full attire for the killer/stalker although we have already agreed on the typical full body attire which will engulf the character not revealing the identity of him/her.

Mask below was purchased as part of our props for the making of the trailer.

Research into a range of Horror films that links to our concept

Me and my media group have been having group discussions as to what our movie conception wll be based on. As 'slasher horror' is the am we have decided that our movie will be about murders that take place withing a group of friends. I have looked into films that follow our story line. ; Scream, Urban Legend and sorority row.
Props: Within each of the movies above the main props are very obvious and repetetive. 'Scream' uses much technology such as computers and mobile phones this is seen through out each film, the killers weapon in this film is mainly a sharp bladed knife or a gun also the film uses the typical costume for the killer keeping his identity hidden, the idea of the weapon being a knife is seen in the other films. 'sorority Row' uses similar stock characters as 'Scream' diffrence being the female dominent character. The main killing prop in 'Sorority Row' is firstly a normal lug wrench then later on the lug wrench has fo sharper serated edges, this film also follows the use of a costume. 'Urban Legend' uses less recgonasible killing props as each murder is though out differently therefore less repetetion of a murder weapon, the costume prop is also used in this film.
In a slasher horror you wll normally see the main killing prop and or a costume to withold the identity of the killer untill the end of the movie. When filming our trailer and story-boarding our movie concept, the importance of Props will be taken into account especially when building the characters profile for the main killer or attacker.

plot

A couple, David (Luke Wilson) and Amy Fox (Kate Beckinsale) take a wrong turn on a remote mountain road. When their car breaks down, they realize they are in a cell phone dead zone, with no reception. They then decide to check into a completely isolated motel in a rural area with a strangely off-putting manager called Mason (Frank Whaley). While in their room, a bored David takes a peek at the video tapes left on top of the television. As he watches the tapes, he realizes they are snuff films, taken in the very room in which they are staying. The couple are alarmed by this as well as loud, insistent banging coming from the door to the adjacent room, and try to run away. Men dressed in black and wearing masks stop them, and they return to their room. David makes a run to the motel's payphone booth to no avail, escaping it just before a car crashes into it. The couple decides to lock themselves in the room when they notice a truck pull in. They try to warn the truck driver only to find out that he's actually there to buy a box of tapes of the snuff films.David and Amy escape into a tunnel that they discover in the bathroom of their room. Two of the masked people chase them inside the tunnel, but the couple evade them. David and Amy end up inside the manager's lair, where they find video monitors taping the entire hotel. Amy tries to make a call to 911 but is interrupted before she can give the operator any useful information. The couple sneak back into the tunnel, making their way into the auto garage across the lot from the motel. Meanwhile, the police unit responding to Amy's call arrives and David and Amy run to him (police officer) as he checks the rooms. They all get inside the police car but it has been sabotaged and the killers murder the policeman while he looks under the hood. The couple run into one of the other motel rooms. David hides Amy in a space inside the ceiling, whilst he ventures out. The killers catch and stab David and he ends up lying unconscious in the doorway. When morning comes, Amy comes down from the ceiling and finds where the killers hid their car. As Amy drives away, a killer breaks into the car from the sun roof, and in her effort to fend him off while driving, Amy crashes the car into the motel, killing her attacker as well as another one of the masked men, revealed to be the gas station attendant that earlier "helped" the couple with their car troubles, who is crushed against the front of the car. She runs into the reception area where she is attacked by an apoplectic Mason. As they fight, Mason beats Amy severely. But in his effort to get a good final shot with his handheld digital video camera, Mason throws Amy within reach of a revolver she had dropped, and she shoots Mason three times. Amy immediately runs to David to find that he is still barely alive. She searches Mason's body for the telephone cord he had pulled out of the wall and tried to use to strangle her, calls 911 again and returns to caress David, who is barely conscious but alive.

what makes each storyline different? is there anything storylines share in common? do any storylines break conventions?

The Fomula

The formula is what one would call the recipe for a genre. 'The formula' consists of many elements which you would expect to see in all Genres. Most genres have selection of elements from which they would illustrate from. It is the elements that make the formula for the genre they sum up what is expected to be seen, the way in which the the elements work together is called 'the formula' . The formula consists of;
Protaganists which are recognisable lead characters, these may be heroes or villains. These lead charactes often have similar trates across a number of genres it is also said that many o the male protaganists are 'Loners' for example the 'Joker' in "The dark knight" suffered in his past life and is now a solo villain terrorising Gotham city.
Stock characters are recognisable though minor characters who play part in the film for example in the "Scream" series faturd actor Courtney cox a member of press although she had a minor role she still featured in all three films.
Plot and stock situations are predictale scenes that one would see given the film genre for example a love story will encouter some kind of confrontation from the past or present therfore leaving the relationship o nthe brink of hope.
Icons are crucial to some genre's the allow the audience to Immediately know what territory they are in just by understanding the icons.
Background and decor this element is very distinctive as it relates to the set, once the audience acknowledge the decor they could instantly imagine the setting.

The Rules For Surviving A Horror Film/ Conventions Of A Horror

Friday 24 September 2010

Applying recognizable conventions of a trailer

In order to play with the recognizable conventions of a trailer , in groups, we came up with ideas of how to market and promote a film called 'Bloodshed High'. Firstly we discussed a story line for Bloodshed High and then we discussed what our unique selling points were (USP). This gave me a chance that to learn how trailers work to engage their audience and i also learnt that the Trailer is an advert for a film and not to be classed as a film.
When having group discussions with my team, Sonia and Nasrine. We spoke about how important it is to specify your USP in a trailer, it allows the audience to have a short insight to the film and allows a hype to begin so we decided how the trailer would start and end and what effect we would like this to create. We looked at many actors when deciding who our main female role would be cast by, Blake Lively was chosen because of her huge young adult fan base through her leading role in Gossip Girl, this is good exposure to the film as our film will be of a 15+ rating and the target audience for the TV hit teen drama Gossip Girl is of the same target.
The production company taking charge of the film will be TWISTED PICTURES, this production company gained wide attention through their work in the SAW series. During the trailer we will show that Twisted Pictures will be taking part in the creation of 'Bloodshed High', this will give the movie good exposure as everyone who sees the compony in co-operation with the movie they would want to see their latest work. Most Saw fans will recognize the production logo and instantly fall for the trailer and want to see the film.
Directing the film, James Wan.
The movie trailer will be posted on Youtube, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, and any other social networking site. This is to maximize the chances of the target audience viewing the trailer. The trailer will be aired on TV at 9:30 onwards again to try and maximize the chances of our target audience viewing our Ad.
Through what we have learnt from Media we decided that it will be best that our movie title should be shown at the end of our trailer following faste paste shots of action and blood scenes accompanied by eeire music to set the tense creepy horror feeling when watching the trailer.
Points which I learnt in the excerise
  • How to engage the audience
  • How to apply previous and current learned knowldege to set tasks

Analyzing a film trailer

'Let Me In'

We are told the name of the film at the end of the trailer emphasing the young girls desperate need as a vampire to be let in and it has been said as a tale that vampires 'always come knocking' for their victims. We see all types of action such as the typical strange supernatural characteristics of a vampires to be jumping up trees, walking bare foot and attacking people. The music plays a key element as it is very mysterious yet alert just like the title and the tempo quickens as parts of the scene begin show action. The speed alters through the trailer as we are going through a short story board in the beginning of what happens but then as we SEE what happens camera shots and editing increases rapidly.
The trailer is definitely more effective as it shows the troubled actions of the young vampire and what she is capable of whereas the poster shows us a lot less but would still grab attention so it could work both ways. This kind of remarkable trailer would definitely be seen in a movie theatre rather than a TV ad to lure the viewer
more into watching it and it would be a good taster for a cinema atmosphere.

Whilst watching the trailer to 'Let me in' I realized that they make the audience aware that the same producers that are creating 'Let me in' were the same producers responsible for 'Cloverfield'

Which is more important, images or words?

Many may ask which is more powerful when it comes to advertising a newly released film, words or images?. It could be said that both are very vital when advertising a film they both have strong advantage when appealing to their chosen target audiences.
Images are strong in a sense that they are what people would focus on more, for example just the logo or motif of a product will make the product sell more so if they apply this method on film posters they could make the image speak louder than the title, therefore catching the attention of more people than usual. The average person will say that there going to go and see a film because it looks good, this is another example off the image being stronger than words, an image can reveal the nature of the film using different screen shots from various scenes of the film. Therefore the audience can reassure themselves with a visual and an understanding of what kind of story line will take place within the film. As well selling the film with the images they will be promoting the actors, this gives the film an even bigger advantage when advertising with images because there are many fans who go to watch a screening to see the work done by certain actors. Thus giving the film a broader audience to advertise to when using images.
On the other hand, words, in depth have so much meaning and if analysed properly could reveal a whole story line. When it comes to film titling I think that the words used are thought about very carefully. Certain films have a certain target audiences, so when they choose their title they will be sure that their audience will understand the meaning and significance of the name and also appeal to them, the trick is to reveal but never to much other wise the plot could be ruined.
In my personal opinion I believe that words are actually more important. They carry a secret meaning and when studied in depth with a proper analytical mind you can discover the true meaning and agenda of the film and not to mention you will understand why it was that a film has been given its name. Films can reach out to their specific target audience

Analyse three movie covers and title, talking about images and font?

1. A nightmare on Elm Street:

The title of this film gives me an idea of what film genre it categorises, Horror. A nightmare is often related to a very scary or traumatising dream which could often leave someone in shock or create a permanent state of fear towards what their nightmare was based on. The words “Elm Street” could suggest the location of the film.

This is the poster for the film A nightmare on Elm Street. The font used is very eerie and creates a cold chill. The title in the poster is slashed, possibly foreshadowing events that will take place in the film. The silhouette against the red background strikes fear because it disguises the true identity of the beholder. This compliments the idea of the film being a nightmare as it not only depicts fear but also a sense of ambiguity, whether asleep or awake.
2.Twilight saga: New Moon:

The title itself hints a fantasy story line, the words “saga” tells me that it is a series therefore it should have more film releases. The words “new moon” supports my idea of the film being of a supernatural and fantasy genre, This is because normally in films of a supernatural nature you link werewolves with the moon. Fore example in the late Michael Jackson´s Thriller video, the story line at the beginning shows him stereotypically transforming into a werewolf at the first sight of the moon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_MuUcxHATo&ob=av2e

This is a poster for the release of New Moon. The font used in the title gives of an ancient feel, as the colour looks quite dated and almost moon lit. The italic font uses straight linear lines, this gives off a cold feeling. The images used in this poster show reference to a love triangle. the female character has a strong hold on the middle male character suggesting affection for the male. The middle male is in a very defensive position with his back turned the Caucasian male he also has his fists clenched tightly and his face is tilted to the side giving a very strong look at the Caucasian male this is telling me that they may be tension between them. The Caucasian male looks very protective of the female character as his eyes are fixated on her and his hands are almost fist like. This tells me that the relationship between each character will be tested in the film and this reveals some of the events that will take place in the film.

3. Boogeyman
The name of this title sounds very familiar, as it would to many who have heard of the story's as a child.
The bogeyman is a legendary monster used by parents often if their child is naughty, it is told that the bogeyman will get them, in an effort to make them behave.Titling the film " Boogeyman " reveals the basis on which the film will be about. Thus creating an instant fan base of everyone who has heard the story of the Boogeyman.
The film poster adds to my idea on the film revolving around the child conception of the Boogeyman man who lives resides in the cupboard, this is made apparent on the poster. The lighting is black which emphasises the fear of the dark and tells me that the film will most probably filmed mainly in low lighting. This also informs me that maybe The Boogeyman is more powerful in the dark. An image of a hand is visible due to minimal lighting, this could indicate a struggle taking place in the film with a character.

Brief-The Meeting.

My first task was to work in a group of Four and plan a story board of a short film clip called " The Meeting ". We then planned the basis of our short clip and designated everyone role in what they would be doing, we then setup where we would the start filming. As a group we decided to take as many shots as possible so that when it came to editing we could use different angles and shot types to show our creativity.
Our short clip was based on friendship rivalry and how it makes you feel alienated. Two friends had gone through in their pasts, one of the friends decided to confront her former friend - Things went wrong and the atmosphere turned cold. This short film shows the way friendships can and have been ruined and shows the after mark of a broken relationship.
whilst filming in this tasks i learnt various things one of which, how important editing is. Editing can create mood and atmosphere within a scene ad can highlight the importance of certain objects or glances. Lighting, par of editing can tell us about a particular person and how there moods are being reflected.
I will be putting what I have learnt from this task towards my year 13 coursework, the making of a horror trailer.
